2010 Poll Methodology

Number of interviews - 393 surveys completed
Field Dates – Sept. 20 – Oct. 6, 2010
Average interview length - 3 minutes, 58 seconds

The survey respondents consisted of 393 residents of South Dakota aged 18 and older whose residence had a listed telephone number. Households called were selected at random from telephone listings. In order to insure a representative statewide sample, the targeted number surveyed for each county was based on population as reported in the 2009 U.S. Census Bureau population estimates. Dakota Wesleyan University students conducted the telephone interviews. All calls were made between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m., taking into consideration the difference in central and mountain time zones.

Margin of Error - The poll’s theoretical margin of error is plus or minus 4.94 percent for the statewide sample, with a confidence level of 95 percent. Subset sample margins of error vary depending on selected sample sizes. Totals may not equal 100 percent as all percentages are rounded to the nearest whole number. Sampling error is only one of many potential sources of error in this or any other public opinion poll.
